I have 6 Labbies ...the 2 senior girls 10 and 12 are on Nutros Senior, 3 younger ones are on Purina Pro Plan Puppy, and one adult on Purina Pro Plan Adult. So far, so good. As soon as I see any signs of shedding or scratching, then I switch. Anne

Well I just switched all my dogs to a raw diet and I can't believe the condition of all the dogs. The energy level on my senior girl It's like she is a puppy again. Silk coats. I am trying a holistic approach. I would like to know feeback. Who here feeds RAW and how do you feed to them? What do you feed?

we have such an inconsistant supply for the RAW diet here....I was without more than with. Over the past 28 years of raising Labbies, can't say there's too much out there that I haven't tried. Continued success with the RAW diet. Anne

I also feed my dogs a raw diet. I will also vouch for the brilliant condition they are in since the switch, especially their teeth. I have yet to brush either dogs' teeth and they are still beautiful as the day they grew in. I buy whole animal parts from mostly asian meat markets. They eat pig, chicken, turkey, whole ducks and game birds, lamb, large chunks of beef. During hunting season, I will get them deer, moose, bear and other game animals from around my area. As a general rule, the piece of meat will be larger than their head to promote vigorous chewing to really benefit their teeth, gums and mouth and neck muscles. Of course, to keep it all balanced, they get organs and bone as well as meat. They've never been so healthy, and our vets agree! edited by beans on 11/28/2008

I've been feeding raw for almost 12 years now...wouldn't go back for the world! For those of you with boxers, check out www.rawboxers.com This style of raw feeding isn't for every breed, but it works wonders for the boxers!

I want so bad to start feeding RAW but I am scared to death I'll do it wrong. I currently feed Innova which is the best kibble I have found but I would really like to learn how to feed RAW.

I have been feeding raw too, for about 1 1/2 yrs. I thought it would be hard to do to, in the beginning I was apprehensive and thought it was going to be complicated. But I have found if I don't over think it it was easier to adjust. I just wish I'd done it sooner. My dogs just love it!

We feed modified raw. I have found that some of my dogs (the Beaucerons) get along fabulously on a raw diet, but the Toys are less tolerant and the Charlies in particular have a difficult time with bones because of the jaw structure. So, we use a pretty high quality kibble along with the raw, and we grind any bones the Charlies get. I know, I know; all the purists scream about how you can't mix the two, but it works for us. We had trouble maintaining sufficient weight on a pure raw diet, so we use the kibble as an equalizer and a source of extra calories. Not to mention, if my puppies go to a home that has difficulties feeding raw, they are already partially acclimated to kibble so they make the adjustment easily. Yes, in theory I believe that raw is better, but in practice we have found that this works better for us. At the end of the day, it's about having healthy animals, and our dogs do best on this regimen. edited by beaucymaniac on 12/27/2008

We recently started feeding our 2 year old boxer BLUE Wilderness from Blue Buffalo. It is a formula high in protein and low in carbs. After seeing the contents of other generic foods, it is way better. So far he likes the food and does not have any problems with it, but we'll keep you posted on how he is doing and if there are any noticeable differences after feeding him this food.

Well, being I have anywhere from 8 to 20 Whippets here at one time I've tried to find a food that works for the dogs and my tight budget.
I fed for many years Purina O.N.E. or Pro Plan, but have recently switched to the Lassie Natural Way and am getting great results from it. It unfortunately only comes in a 20# bag where I get it. I've heard other people feed Diamond High Energy/Protein with good results too.
I'd love to feed RAW, but right now it's not in the forseable future.
Happy New Year everyone.

Boy, am I with you on the tight budget! Especially since I do rescue here and our population is also highly flexible. I feed Diamond too, for the kibble part of our feed, and I have seen great results with it. Good coats, muscle, etc. Of course, as I said I give raw along with it, but the kibble part is Diamond. It seems to be the best value for a good quality feed without going broke feeding it! We have both dog and cat rescues and even the occasional livestock (including an entire herd of goats once!) and all the dogs and cats seem to switch to the Diamond/raw regimen without any serious issues so far.
Used to feed O.N.E., as well as Pro Plan but I could never find one that worked for ALL the dogs. And it got too hard to find the special turkey ProPlan that I was feeding to the Charlies. I was told to use it because it supposedly grew better coats (we show these little guys) but I noticed they kept trying to steal the Diamond from the Beaucerons! So I gave up and switched them all to it, and I haven't noticed that it hurt the coats any either.
Happy New Year from our corner too! edited by beaucymaniac on 1/4/2009

It's so nice to finally "see" someone else feeding Diamond! I feed Diamond Naturals Chicken and Rice for my adults and DN Large Breed Puppy to my puppies. I love the quality, and it's the "best bang for your buck" nutritionally. We also supplement with raw weekly. I'd love to go raw completely, but it's just not financially (or enough freezer space) reasonable. I also can't imagine what new puppy owners would do (probably freak out) if I sent them home with raw.
I'm on the line right now as to switch foods again. I'm thinking of going to the Nutro Natural Choice. At least for my puppies. We had a run in with bacterial infections and giardia, and their stomachs haven't been the same since. I'm thinking about switching one of the puppies to this to see if it makes a difference in the poop. If it does, I just may switch all the puppies. I hate having to feed a bunch of different brands/varieties to the dogs, but you gotta do what you've gotta do!
I've fed a variety of foods over the years, but here within the past 5 years, it seems I switch brands about once a year....

I also feed my Poodles raw and what a huge difference it makes, not only in their health but in the puppies that we produce. The litters have much more compact afterbirth and in tact with very little fluid or blood. I have tried many dog food but never got the continued consistency of health that I have with the RAW. Also the stool do not stink and neither does the urine. The teeth are much stronger and healthier. I no longer have puppies getting such things as Giardia, Coccidiosis or any other of the puppy bacterias. After five years of success youwould be hard pressed to get me to switch back. Besides if you look around you can find resources and you do not need a huge freezer to store. We pick up fresh every week and our local grocery store acts as our freezers for us. Recently I was in a PetSmart after not being in there for a very long time and was horrified at the cost of quality dog food. It cost me half the amount of processed dog food to feed my crew and a much better quality of food. Go RAW.

I told you that we started feeding our boxer BLUE Wilderness, well not anymore. He could not get used to the food and started having liquidy stool. BLUE Wilderness seems to have too much protein, maybe it is more appropriate for dogs that live outside or are true working dogs. We now feed him Royal Canin for Boxers and he has no problems with it. It is designed with boxers in mind and is made in Ontario, Canada. We are glad to support our local economy!

I raise Cavalier King Charles Spaniels. I keep my breeding stock as well as my puppies on Purina Puppy Chow all year round. I found it to be the best for maintaining weight, shiney coats and good stools. Their energy level is good and they seem to like it well. My puppies do well on it with nice coats, firm stools and overall good health. I feed the beef and not the other as they don't like the other type as well. Too many veggies in it i guess and who likes vegetables? lol.
